Erving Select Board Approves $140,000 Year-End Budget Transfers, Signs Two-Year Trash Disposal Deal

ERVING — July 14, 2026 — Erving Select Board votes to transfer $140,000 between budget groups to close fiscal year 2026 deficits. Meeting jointly with the Finance Committee on July 14, the board unanimously approved moving $55,000 and $85,000 from the public safety budget group into general government and public works, respectively, with Town Administrator Brian Smith directing the town accountant to make all necessary adjustments before the July 15 fiscal close. Legal services — running roughly $130,000 over budget — were identified as the primary driver of the general government shortfall; snow and ice removal accounted for approximately $70,000 of the $80,500 public works overage. The board also unanimously approved a two-year solid waste disposal agreement with Cassella Waste Management Incorporated at approximately $101 per ton for FY27, down from the $112 per ton Erving paid Republic Services in FY26 — a savings of about $11 per ton made possible by joining a Franklin County regional rate. Smith noted the town will have significantly less free cash available heading into FY27 than in recent years.
